Blogging
Throughout the semester we were tasked with blogging about our progress on our semester projects. I have found this to be a very beneficial way to journal all of my progress and findings. I have enjoyed this so much that I think I’m going to continue to use my blog in this manner for future courses and projects. In fact, I have a Senior Project that I am going to be working on over the...
Class
James gave his presentation in class. I was unable to attend the actual presentation but I did listen to the podcast that was created. I thought it was pretty neat that IUPUI is interested in using Web 2.0 technologies outside of our CIT499 class. I think this will only be a good thing and as a university we need to break into this realm of technology because it’s the wave of the future.

Class Today
I actually gave my semester project presentation during class today. I received a lot of good constructive critisism on how to make my mashup even better and more useful. Overall, I am please with the way the project went and especially what I learned about Web 2.0 by working on the project all semester.
I’m going to make modifications to my mashup to make it even more useful for my...
Class Summary
Today we started class by discussing chapter 14 from the book “The World is Flat” by Tom Friedman. This chapter discusses how technology has made communication very accessible however it’s made interaction with others in a face-to-face manner a thing of the past. He uses the analogy that we have dog’s hearing. This lead into a new venture called “Attention...
CIT499 Semester Project Complete!
I completed my CIT499 semester project. I put the finishing touches on the project by doing a summary write up on the project. I also put together a PowerPoint presentation to help me outline what I did all semester. The actual presentation will actually be given in class this coming Wednesday. I am please with all that I learned this semester about Web 2.0 and mashups. There are many very useful...
CIT499 Class Summary
We started class by discussing the video podcast that we watched during the last class by Tim Berrners-Lee. I didn’t realize that the new version of the Web is coined “The Semantic Web”. The Semantic Web is a web of data. It’s about the common formats for integration and the combination of data drawn from diverse sources. With the use of XML instead of HTML we can start to...
CIT499 Class Today
Dr. Ho spoke about different blog technologies in class today. He showed us the Lijit search wijit report that he received over the weekend. This report contained information about stats taken from his blog that were recorded via the serch wijit. This report provides information about the number of searches that were performed on the blog and what critera these searches contained. We also...
CIT499 Project Summary Paper
I started writing my summary paper for my CIT499 project the other day. What I thought was going to be a brief summary ended up being a three page paper. I was a little bit surprised when I looked back over my blog postings discover all of the things I learned about Web 2.0 that I incorporated into my Yahoo Pipes mashup project. This course taught me quite a bit about Web 2.0 and social...
Lijit Search Wijit
I’ve added a Lijit search wijit to my blog on Monday which was over 48 hours ago. When I search on it I still don’t get any results returned. I sent a tweet to the Lijit support using Twitter to ask them for some help. I can see how this tool can be very useful if I can actually get it to work correctly.
Hopefully I will get a response soon and be able to figure out how to fix the...
Semester Project Update: sqlblog.com
I updated my Yahoo Pipes mashup again. This time I added another YQL module and connected it to a feed from sqlblog.com. This is a site for SQL Server database administrators to blog about anything and everything SQL related. I setup my YQL module to filter the feed for blog postings about SQL Server 2008 SP1. We are currently upgrading to SQL Server 2008 and Service Pack 1 was just released for...
CIT499 Semester Project Updates
I made a couple of additions to my Yahoo Pipes mashup for my CIT499 project today. I added a feed from a site that we SQL DBA’s find helpful. It’s a feed from mssqltips.com. It gives daily tips for SQL Server DBA’s. My group has Adesa has found this site to be a good resource at times. I thought it would be a good idea to include the feed from this site so that my mashup will...

YQL Continued...
I was able to add a “where” clause to my YQL statement in my Yahoo Pipes mashup project. I added a clause that will only return SQL Server 2008 information to my pipe. This will come in hand because we are currently in the middle of a major upgrade to SQL Server 2008 at work. Since I am filtering my YQL statement with a “where” clause it will filter down the number of...
CIT499 Project Update YQL
I started to experiment with a new Yahoo Pipes module for my mashup called YQL. This is a SQL language geared towards Yahoo. I’ve added a module to my mashup that will select information from a feed. I’m going to continue to experiment with this module to see what else I can gain by using it in my mashup.

CIT499 Added another Feed to Mashup
I created a twitter account for my SQL Server DBA group at work. I created an account called AdesaSQLDBAs. I added this as a Twitter group using GroupTweet. I added the RSS feed for the group to my Yahoo Pipes mashup. This will be a useful means of communicating with the group about projects, tasks etc. I will be distributing the group name to my co-workers and explaining Twitter to them and...
CIT499 Project Update
I have made some good progress with my Yahoo Pipes mashup. I recently encorporated a feed from Google Calendar that will update the mashup when a new person is on-call for the week. It will show who is on-call and what days they are on-call during the week.
I also was excited to find a way to integrate an online document applicaiton with my mashup. I started using Google Docs to begin with but I...

Google Calendar for CIT499 project
I thought of a great idea for my semester project. I’m going to incorporate a Google calendar with my Yahoo Pipes mashup. At my company we use calendars to keep track of which SQL Server DBA’s are on-call for any given week. This will be a great feature to incorporate into my mashup. I’ve already included it as an RSS feed but I’m going to look into the best way to display...
Switched back to Mailbucket for CIT499 project
After using MakeMeTheKing for a while I’ve found several bugs. The RSS feed actually stopped working all together with Yahoo Pipes. Needless to say, I switched back to using Mailbucket.org for my SQL Server alert email feeds to RSS. I changed my Yahoo Pipe SQL Server Database Administrator mashup to use the feed from Mailbucket instead of MakeMeTheKing.
MakeMeTheKing instead of Mailbucket for CIT499...
I finally found a better online email to RSS service. It’s called MakeMeTheKing.com. I am going to use this instead of Mailbucket because the RSS feeds on MakeMeTheKing are not encrypted. This will work out perfectly for my SQL Server Administrator Yahoo Pipe. I can now forward SQL Server critical errors from my work email to my mailbox at MakeMeTheKing.com and then reference the RSS URL in...
Mailbucket and my semester project...
I’ve been working some on my semester project for CIT499 today. I was experimenting with using Mailbucket to produce RSS feeds of SQL Server error messages that I receive at work. I then encorporated the RSS feed URL into my Yahoo Pipes mashup. This appears to work pretty well with one exception. I can’t figure out how to get around the Outlook encryption. I have a rule in my Outlook...
Started Semester Project
I started my semester project for CIT499 tonight. I haven’t done much yet but I added a couple modules to my Yahoo Pipes mashup. I’ve also saved and named the mashup “SQL Server Database Administrators”. This is only the tip of the iceburg but I had to start somewhere. I have a lot to learn about Yahoo Pipes and all of the different modules and functionality that it has to...
CIT 499 Semester Project Update
Well, after doing some research on Inte’s Mash Maker I thought there was little to be desired. The interface was not very intuitive and there appeared to be several bugs. I couldn’t even save a test mashup. It also did not appear that it could do what I intend to create for my semester project. I was not impressed in the least bit. Therefore, I’ve decided to use Yahoo Pipes for...
Doug Karr Presentation
Last night we had a presenter in our CIT 499 class. Doug Karr and he’s from Compendium Blogware. Doug’s title is Vice President of Blogging Evangelism. What a title huh? Doug gave a very informative presentation on lots of different emerging technologies that are starting to come to the fore front. He spoke about cloud computing and what that means. I thought it was very interesting to...
Project Proposal
I just submitted my semester project proposal to Dr. Ho this morning. Now I’m ready to jump in and start my project. I will need to familiarize myself well with the Intel Mash Maker software tool. This is the first step I want to take with my project. After I familiarize myself with the tool then I’ll be ready to start creating my Mashup. I have already signed up for and installed the...
Work Work Work!!
I think the past month has been the busiest I’ve ever been at Adesa. At the beginning of the year we switched roles within our team and traded primary support for certain databases. I got stuck with the PeopleSoft financial database for the first quarter of 09. This is a monster of a SQL Server database. It just so happened that there has been a scheduled major upgrade of this database and...
Intel Mash Maker
I’ve decided to use Intel’s Mash Maker tool to create my Mashup for my semester project. I’ve installed the tool and integrated it with my FireFox 3.0.6 browser, which I love by the way. I’m looking forward to learning how to use the tool. I’m also looking forward to creating a Mashup that will benefit SQL Server database administrators.
Take a look at the tool for...
ScribeFire
I just installed ScribeFire so that I can conveniently blog from my FireFox browser. I’m just testing it out right now to see how it works. I can already tell that this is going to come in handy!
Another Project Update
I spoke with Dr. Ho after class today about my semester project. We agreed that it would be interesting to feed off of my SQL Server Database administration experience and do a mashup that could be benificial to others in the field or even my group at work. I am going to check out some other mashup tools as well like Intel’s mashmaker and Google’s tool.
I can see a mashup on SQL...
Twitter and Social Networking
I’m really starting to get into the whole social networking thing. I never used to participate very much before CIT499. So far, it’s opened my eyes up to the possibility of social networking sites. I never even used to use facebook and now I find myself very interested in seeing what my friends and others are doing in their lives.
Twitter has been very cool! I like tweeting using the...
Project Update
I’ve decided I’d like to do a Yahoo! Pipes mashup on Web 2.0 and social networking. I will use many of the different functionality available with Yahoo! Pipes. I think this will give others a good central location to learn about many different aspects of Web 2.0 and social networking. I will provide feeds and other information from various sites etc.
I envision this mashup as a tool...
Nice Weekend...
I had a pretty nice weekend. I went to Illinois on a guys hockey trip. Every year at this time a group of guys that I grew up with take a short weekend trip to the University of Illinois to watch a hockey game. We’ve been going on this trip for about 8 years now. We always have such a good time. We got back early afternoon on Sunday just in time to do some school work and get ready for the...

Snow!
Wow, yesterday was one of the bigger snow storms that I’ve experienced in my lifetime. I didn’t even realize we were supposed to get that much. We eneded up getting about 12 inches. I worked from home and my wife had the day off because she is a teacher. It was quite an interesting day.
I discussed my semester project a little more with Dr. Ho. I’ve decided to do a more general...
Idea for CIT499 Project
I’m thinking about creating a Yahoo! Pipes mashup for my CIT499 project. I would like to incorporate many different intrests of various members of my family. This would not only teach me all about the different features of Yahoo! Pipes and how to use them but also teach my family members about Web 2.0 and what the face of the web is moving towards. I got the idea because I hear a family...
